The language of relationships is emotion and our exquisitely tuned capacity for emotional experience and expression lie at the core of what it is to be human. Emotions give our lives vitality and meaning. They allow us to access vital information that moves us to act in the service of our wellbeing. The more we are able to access our unfettered emotional experience in relationship with ourselves and others, the better our lives become.
Suffering can reliably be linked to the ways in which we learn to constrict, disown, distort, and devalue our emotional experience in relationship with ourselves and important others. Relief from suffering and movement toward growth and connection can be found in identifying and articulating emotional experience in relationship with a caring other who acts as witness, participant, and co-explorer. My task is to enter into a respectful, responsive, curious, spontaneous, and empathically attuned relationship with you so that you can access the wisdom of your experience. We are extraordinarily complex animals yet we all share the need to feel connected to our selves and others in ways that feel right and true. Therapy acts in the service of this connection.
